COVID-19 has caused more children to become anxious, especially pre-schoolers, when they’re preparing to leave the nursery to attend school in September and January. Although it’s a new and exciting milestone for your child’s journey, not many like change; this includes both parents and children, as the prospect of something new can be scary and daunting.
In preparation for the transition, we focus on the child, their feelings, what can they expect from the school and how they can regulate their emotions. Talking to your child can help with the process; it can help their brain process the incoming change and tackle it head-on. You could ask your child questions about the change; we’ve put together a few simple ideas that you can do to help.
1. Show your child the school, drive past, and have a walk around the site.
2. Read books about having new experiences and going to school – Usborne ‘Getting Ready for School’ is a fantastic book.
3. Try to visit the inside of the school and perhaps try to meet the class teacher.
4. Share your experience about going to school; maybe you have some old photographs, show them and relate them to your child.
It’s best to prepare your child through priming statements as they process the change ready in time for school. Remember, your child will notice if you are upset and sad; try to ensure that you are optimistic about the change and stay positive; of course, you will feel nervous.
Just remember to RELAX. If you’re unsure or need extra support, reach out to the Nursery Wolverhampton , the staff have experienced this many times and are here to help you and your child.
